Step by step: smoothing harsh cymbals

1 · Insert
Add Quell on the hi-hat, overhead or cymbal track. For overall kit harshness, use it on the drum buss instead.
2 · Set sensitivity
Raise the sensitivity until the display shows it catching the piercing peaks, then ease back so it only acts on the harsh moments.
3 · Focus the top
Keep the action in the harsh region — roughly 6–12 kHz for sizzle, lower for metallic ring — so the body of the kit is untouched.
4 · Set the depth
Dial the amount so the top end is smooth but still bright. A little goes a long way; aim to round off the spikes, not erase them.
5 · A/B honestly
Bypass to compare at matched loudness. Judge it across the whole part, not on the single loudest crash.
