How to fix a muddy mix

Muddy mixes almost always come from the same handful of problems — low-mid buildup, masking and untamed resonances. Here is a clear, repeatable process to clean it up, mostly with tools you already have (plus one free plugin).

Where mud actually comes from

'Muddy' is a vague word for a specific problem: too much energy stacking up in the low-mids, roughly 200–600 Hz, plus frequencies from different instruments fighting for the same space. Almost every part of a mix has some content down there — kick, bass, guitars, piano, vocals, pads — and when it all piles up, the mix turns thick, boxy and indistinct.

Step 1 — High-pass with purpose

Not every track needs deep lows. High-pass instruments that don't live in the sub region — vocals, guitars, hi-hats, pads, overheads — to clear out rumble and low-mid build-up they don't need. Do it by ear: raise the filter until the sound thins, then back off slightly. Suddenly the kick and bass have room to breathe.

Step 2 — Tame the low-mids

On the thickest offenders, find the boxy frequency (sweep a narrow EQ boost through 200–500 Hz until the mud jumps out, then cut there). Small, surgical cuts on a few tracks clear far more mud than one big cut on the master.

Step 3 — Kill boxy, ringing resonances

Static EQ cuts are blunt — they remove the frequency all the time, even when it isn't a problem. Resonances (boxy room tones, ringing notes, harsh build-ups) come and go, so they are better handled dynamically.
